A training method for everyone
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen deep muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility.
Pilates focus on the “powerhouse” muscles: glutes, hips, pelvic floor, and lower back.
This technique also prioritizes quality over quantity. Unlike other kind of exercises, during a Pilates class there are not a lor of repetitions included for each move. The idea is that by working on each exercise with precision and focusing on breathing, you can achieve remarkable results in less time.

There are several ways to individualize and adapt Pilates exercises, considering your age, weight, physical ability, and level of fitness. The exercises were created to allow people with all diferent levesls and abilities to participate assuring that they will be physically challenged and safe while they workout.
You don’t need a lot of room to do Pilates at home—just enough space to roll out your mat. Once you learn the basics and take a few classes, you can invest in some small equipment like a elastic band and fit ball.

Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born near Düsseldorf, Germany in 1883. He seems to have been a frail child, suffering from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. His drive and determination to overcome these diseases led him to become a great gymnast, diver, and skier.
In 1912 Pilates move to England and end up working as a circus performer, boxer, and self-defense instructor. During the First World War, he continues developing his training technique by teaching his fellow German internees and working with the hospital patients.
Then, Pilates and his wife, Clara, emigrated to the USA in the early 1920s. Together they developed and taught the method in their ‘body-conditioning gym’ in New York in 1926.
While Joe is the creator of the method, it was his wife Clara that became the real teacher in the studio. She established the tradition of evolving and adapting the exercises to the individual needs of clients. This is a tradition that the Institute of Pilates is proud to continue.
When Joseph Pilates developed this method, he did not talk about long, lean muscles, or flat abs. He was interested in getting the body healthy and vital. This way, flat abs, better posture, balanced muscularity are natural results.

“You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.”
